Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.

& making the most of — of worse & much/ worse — if not/ this light lifting/ up over the ridge
Seeing over the ridge is a gift. Especially when we are sitting on a ledge. An edge. A decision point. A cross road. A moment when we know everything after will never be the same. Clarity in those moments is hard won. Peace in those moments comes with years of listening and breathing.
Our light in those times lifts us up. It keeps us learning and creating and growing. It keeps us from drinking the poison and burning it all down and tearing it all to shreds. It’s more than simple positivity. It’s more than silver linings. It’s more than half full glasses. It’s about the certainty that our light sustains. It’s about the certainty that our light is a powerful force. It’s about the certainty that our light allows us to lift our eyes and see beyond the ridge.
