Katie Steedly’s first-person piece [The Unspeakable Gift] is a riveting retelling of her participation in a National Institutes of Health study that aided her quest to come to grips with her life of living with a rare genetic disorder. Her writing is superb.
In recognition of receiving the Dateline Award for the Washingtonian Magazine essay, The Unspeakable Gift.

Home Is A Women

our ride is silent from Kampala to Lira
Arao Ameny
he gives me a curious glance from the rearview mirror at my many faces looking at me while I hold on to my suitcase
while I carry all the women living inside of me
I carry them home
I have traveled a lot over the years. Never running away, really. More running to. Running to quench thirst. Running to pursue adventure. Running to find my edge. Running to fall apart and back together. Running to hurry and not rest. Running to pay attention. Running to practice. Running to breathe.
The women living inside me have always been there. A choir of angels whispering, “Sing your song.” A mirror showing me past, present, and future. They have faces and names. The ground beneath my feet and the sky above me. My passport and my permission.
Because they are with me I am home. Because they are with me I am. Because they are with me loneliness flows legato. Because they are with me I am beach glass washed ashore in brokenness, beauty, and hope. Because they are with me, I am seen on the inside. The only place that really matters. From there, all can be seen.
