I am fascinated by the role of the arts in the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s. Billions were invested in putting unemployed Americans back to work within the WPA. Bridges and roads were built. Water treatment plants were constructed. Artists wrote, painted, and performed. I think about this right now because we are at a time when significant Federal investment in public works needs to be made, and the arts must be part of that. When the arts receive public support amazing things happen.
